What is a Polygraph?

Polygraph Test
Polygraph Test

A polygraph (popularly referred to as a ‘lie detector’) is an instrument that measures and records several physiological responses such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, breathing rhythms, body temperature and skin conductivity (sweat gland activity) while the subject is asked and answers a series of questions, on the theory that false answers will produce distinctive measurements. The polygraph measures physiological changes caused by the sympathetic nervous system during questioning. In the UK, the polygraph is typically utilised for relationship issues -including cheating spouses or cheating partners, theft, sexual abuse and confirmation of innocence. It is now regularly used by UK government departments, as well as numerous international companies in the area of integrity and lifestyle checks.

All our polygraph examiners (lie detector examiners) are very discreet and highly experienced, so please be reassured that when you book a test with us it will be handled with great sensitivity and discretion.

Polygraphs are in some countries have been used as an interrogation tool with criminal suspects, or candidates for sensitive public or private sector employment. The British (UK) government has now initiated Polygraph examinations in its most sensitive areas of investigation and are conducting clinical trials into the ongoing use of Polygraphy. The use and effectiveness of the polygraph historically has been controversial, with its validity subject to criticism. However, critics previously argued that even taking into account high estimates of the polygraph’s accuracy (up to 98% accurate), a significant number of subjects may appear to be lying and would therefore unfairly suffer the consequences of “failing” a polygraph test. However, Research Associates’examiners use only the very latest computerised instruments to accurately evaluate results and are fully conversant with the very most up to date techniques which help secure reliable successful results, once again ensuring precision in all reports.

Our UK lie detector experts are of a standard whereby they have undertaken specialist polygraph training for Post Conviction Sex Offender Testing (PCSOT) on behalf of the British/UK government.

In a UK court case (lawsuit), an involved party may order a psychologist to write an opinion based on polygraph results to substantiate the credibility of its claims. However, the party must bear the expense themselves, and the court weighs the opinion like any other opinion the party has ordered. UK courts themselves do not order or pay for polygraph tests. In most cases, polygraph tests are undertaken voluntarily by a defendant in order to substantiate claims and therefore provide documentary evidence.

It is worth noting that the British Government now deploy Polygraph testing. Since Polygraph examinations became digital/computerised, the results of examinations have become uniform and more measurable, in terms of standards, procedures and techniques and results have therefore become increasingly scientifically based (and the subject of significant meta-analysis.

Of interest, the British government have been conducting clinical trials, (which have recently concluded) into the use of Polygraph examinations and are currently running proactive programmes using Polygraph examinations in very sensitive areas of regional and national government (including counter terrorism programmes and paedophile re-offender units). The UK government now recognise that Polygraph testing deliver extremely high rates of accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How accurate is the polygraph?
A: Polygraph testing is very accurate, but is not infallible. According to the American Polygraph Association, over 250 studies into the accuracy of polygraph testing have been conducted over the past twenty-five years. In the past, it has been estimated that the accuracy of the results is in the range of 90-95%. More recently research indicates the accuracy of computerised polygraph testing as now being 98%.

Q: Is a ‘polygraph test’ similar to a ‘lie detector test’?
A: Yes. A polygraph instrument is a set of scientific, diagnostic apparatus, often called a ‘lie detector’. It is more accurate to refer to a polygraph instrument as a “truth verifier”.

Q: I am telling the truth but feel nervous about taking a polygraph examination. How does the polygraph establish the difference between my being nervous and reactions as a result of not telling the truth/lying?
A: It is normal for an innocent person to feel nervous taking a polygraph test and the polygraph examiner is always aware of this. Nervous reactions, recorded on polygraphic charts, are not interpreted by the polygrapher as any manifestation of deception. Nervous reactions differ from reactions recorded when a person is lying deliberately.

Q: Before I take a polygraph test, will I know what the specific questions are?
A: Yes. You will be informed of the exact wording of each question that will be asked during the course of your polygraph examination. There are no ‘trick questions’.

Q: How long will a polygraph examination take?
A: Most polygraph examination last between two and three hours. Some will last longer or shorter depending on the nature of the investigation.

Q: Why should a polygraph examination typically last between two and three hours?
A: The examiner typically gives a detailed explanation of the polygraph procedure and explains how the polygraph works. The examiner will also answer any questions that the examinee may have. Subsequent to the test, the examiner will then talk-through and inform the examinee of the results of the polygraph examination.

Q: Are you able to carry out polygraph tests in a foreign language?
A: Our expert examiners are able to carry out polygraph tests in any language, using appropriate linguistic experts.
